Perfume – A Minimalist Short Film

Explore the Art of Minimalism in Filmmaking

Perfume is a minimalist short film created as part of my university project for Practice Four of Working with the Film Camera. The film delves into an intense and unique scenario: a woman pursued by both men and another woman due to her overpowering pheromone perfume.

Film Description:
Perfume explores a compelling narrative through a minimalist lens, featuring a woman whose strong perfume leads to an unusual and dramatic chase. The project was an opportunity to apply various filmmaking techniques, including:

  • Dynamic Camera Movement: Enhancing the tension and urgency of the chase.
  • Screen Direction: Maintaining clarity and fluidity in the narrative.
  • 20% and 30 Degree Rules: Ensuring seamless cuts and spatial coherence.
  • Action Axis: Reinforcing the viewer’s sense of direction and movement.
  • Coverage Planning: Strategically planning shot coverage for a continuous and engaging narrative.
  • Editing with Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve: Crafting a polished final product.
  • Sound Recording: Adding realism and depth to the chase scene.

Project Constraints:

  • Minimalist Approach: Limited to no more than 5 shots, each exemplifying continuity.
  • Duration: A concise runtime of less than one minute.

Creative Decisions:
This project challenged me to make deliberate creative choices within tight constraints, focusing on continuity and the effective use of the action axis to craft a visually engaging and cohesive story.
