Welcome to my creative space! I’m Michal Indrak, an award-winning Czech filmmaker currently based in the UK. On this site, you’ll find a selection of my work, including experimental short films that aim to offer unique and immersive cinematic experiences.
My Filmmaking Journey
My filmmaking journey began at Birkbeck, University of London, where I am currently pursuing a BA in Film and Media Practice. This programme has introduced me to a variety of cinematic styles, from experimental film to contemporary storytelling techniques. The courses offer a blend of practical exercises and critical analysis, enabling me to develop my skills in filmmaking, scriptwriting, digital media strategies, and image and sound editing. This foundation is preparing me for a wide range of roles in the creative industries.
To deepen my craft, I’ve also completed advanced training at Raindance in London, earning certifications in Directing, Cinematography, and Directing Actors. These experiences have refined my understanding of the collaborative nature of filmmaking, particularly the relationship between the Director and Director of Photography (DoP), and the nuances of performance direction and action choreography.
Filmmaking Philosophy
I am passionate about experimenting with new cinematic techniques while drawing on the rich history of film. My work is deeply influenced by movements such as the avant-garde, aiming to create films that are visually striking and thought-provoking. Filmmaking, for me, is about translating abstract ideas and visions into tangible, immersive experiences that resonate emotionally with the audience. By blending innovative techniques with traditional storytelling, I seek to craft narratives that not only captivate the eye but also evoke a deep and lasting impact.
Every project is an opportunity to explore new creative boundaries and experiment with both visual and auditory elements. I strive to create films that spark conversations and invite viewers to experience the world through a fresh and imaginative lens.
Notable Projects and Achievements
One of my key works, Whispers: Waves of the Diary, is an experimental short film that explores the beauty and tranquility of Whitstable. Through evocative visuals and a dynamic soundtrack, the film captures the town’s serene sunsets, vibrant town centre, and maritime heritage. Whispers has garnered significant recognition, including:
- Best First-time Director at the Ottawa Film Awards.
- Best Cinematographer at the Cineplay International Film Festival.
- Honourable Mention at the Athens International Monthly Art Film Festival (AIMAFF).
- Finalist for Best Experimental Film and Best Director at the Elegant International Film Festival.
- Finalist at the Cine Vista Oasis Film Awards.
- Finalist for Best Documentary (Short) and Best Director at the Chalachitra International Film Awards.
In addition to these accolades, I am currently working on a new project titled Replaced, which explores the emotional and ethical implications of artificial intelligence on human connection and mental health. This thought-provoking short film is in pre-production and will soon be submitted to a variety of film festivals.and ethical implications of artificial intelligence on human connection and mental health.
