Introduction to Cinema

In this module, I delved into the rich tapestry of cinema, exploring diverse films and various filmmaking practices and analytical methods. Throughout the term, I deepened my understanding of film form, history, and theory, fostering a greater appreciation for the art of cinema.

The module is structured into four interconnected sections:

  1. Film Language: I examined the evolution of dominant film language and critical approaches that shape our perception of films.
  2. The Studio System: Delved into the historical and industrial contexts of the Hollywood studio system, exploring key concepts within film studies.
  3. Film Form: Explored selected forms and movements within cinema history, offering alternatives to the classical Hollywood narrative.
  4. National Cinemas: Investigated the concept of national cinemas through selected case studies, broadening our understanding of global cinematic traditions.

Through a combination of lectures, discussions, and screenings, I expanded my cinematic horizons, gaining insights into the diverse and multifaceted world of filmmaking.
