This year, I had the opportunity to delve into the fascinating world of contemporary cinema through a module that explored film as a cultural practice, an artistic activity, and a technological phenomenon. The module challenged us to consider the key changes cinema has undergone in recent years and how these changes have impacted our experiences as viewers and students of film.

Key Themes and Concepts

The module was structured around six key themes:

  • Movie-Going: We examined the evolving landscape of film exhibition, from traditional cinemas to streaming platforms and the rise of alternative screening spaces.
  • Digital Culture: We explored the impact of digital technologies on film production, distribution, and consumption, considering how they have transformed filmmaking practices and audience engagement.
  • World Cinema: We broadened our understanding of cinema beyond Hollywood, exploring diverse cinematic traditions and movements from around the globe.
  • Film Festivals: We investigated the role of film festivals in promoting independent cinema, fostering cultural exchange, and shaping film culture.
  • Film Criticism: We honed our critical analysis skills by engaging with various critical approaches and learning how to construct well-supported arguments about film.
  • Film History: We gained a deeper appreciation for the historical development of cinema, tracing its evolution from early silent films to the present day.

Learning Outcomes

Through engaging lectures, lively discussions, and hands-on activities, I gained a deeper understanding of contemporary cinema as a dynamic and multifaceted cultural practice. I developed my ability to:

One of the highlights of the module was the opportunity to meet film professionals working in the exhibition sector, gaining insights into the challenges and opportunities facing contemporary cinema. Additionally, visits to the BFI library and film archives provided a unique glimpse into the rich history of film and its preservation.

This module has significantly broadened my understanding of contemporary cinema and equipped me with valuable critical and analytical skills. I’m excited to continue exploring the ever-evolving world of film and contribute to its ongoing evolution.
