This past semester, I embarked on a captivating journey through the history of cinema, exploring its remarkable evolution from its nascent beginnings in the late 19th century to its golden age in the 1920s and beyond. This module provided a comprehensive overview of the key developments, innovations, and cultural influences that shaped the art and industry of film during its formative years.

Diverse Perspectives on Film History

We approached the history of cinema from a variety of perspectives, examining:

  • Technological Advancements: We traced the impact of technological innovations, such as the introduction of sound, colour, and widescreen formats, on film production, aesthetics, and audience experiences.
  • Economic Forces: We analysed the economic evolution of the film industry, exploring the rise of studios, distribution networks, and exhibition practices.
